Hostess sales were declining, in large part, because the core target -- kids -- had been neglected for years. A comprehensive communications plan was implemented to break through the clutter of kids TV and generate awareness of the brand - and make it "cool" again. The results were double digit sales increases in key markets, creative recognition (a silver Clio, Cannes finalist and Golden Marble "Best of Show") and advertising awareness of 90% among kids.

Hints
The "Hints" campaign was a dedicated TV effort in support of the "Chew the Clue" promotion. The spot was designed to entice consumers to buy STARBURST Fruit Chews and participate in the promotion by calling in to guess the mystery fruit chew flavor. In order to appeal to our teen target, the "Hints" spot was humorous, edgy and "cool" while successfully communicating the "how to" of the promotion. Most importantly, the spot reinforced the STARBURST personality and real fruit taste equity while generating excitement around the promotion and creating news/"talk value" for Fruit Chews.
