As a response to the Saudi led blockade countries’ demands to shut down Al Jazeera, the network responded with a film outlining its own set of demands related to Press Freedom under #DemandPressFreedom.   The hashtag became a rallying call to stand in solidarity with Al Jazeera, as public support grew independent journalists, human rights groups and global news organizations covered Al Jazeera’s demands. The Al Jazeera demands were viewed 40 million times across various digital platformsEventually the United Arab Emirates officials dropped their demand to shutdown Al Jazeera.
