Gun violence is the leading cause of death for American children. 80% of school shooters reveal their plans, which means 80% of school shootings are preventable. Yet these warnings are dismissed as “jokes.” To highlight the absurdity of treating threats as “jokes”, Sandy Hook Promise asked comedians to incorporate real threats from school shooters into their stand-up comedy routines. Audiences initially thought these threats were jokes, but quickly realized the reality. The campaign gained widespread attention, shifted mindsets, and drove action to prevent future tragedies – with zero media spend.
